Abstract

Metaphor is an expression of figurative language that gives cognition and makes the language look more aesthetic. This expression is frequently found in the Quran that must be understood properly because the Quran's meanings are sometimes stated explicit and sometimes implicit with figurative language. Translating metaphors in the scriptures is a challenge in itself because this holy book contains high literature, thus, a good translation must be able to maintain the beauty of the literary elements and the content of the conveyed meaning. This research examined the metaphors in the Al-Qur'an Surat Ali Imran and its translation strategies in Indonesian and English versions. This research used qualitative descriptive method to analyze the metaphor and the strategies used to translate the metaphor. The data is taken from the English and Indonesian translations of Surat Ali Imran. The results of this research showed that there are several metaphorical expressions in Surat Ali Imran and there are two strategies of metaphor translation applied in the English version and three strategies in the Indonesian version. These strategies are reproducing the same image in the target language, converting the metaphor to its sense, and combining the metaphor with sense (only in the Indonesian version).
